Watercolors
When I use watercolors I am aware of some of the great artists that handled watercolor expertly. Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent come to mind. Their paintings were dynamic in the use of color while allowing the paper being used to remain fresh and alive. They are a tough act to follow.
What I struggle with is overdoing the paint layering and turning the surface into mud. In oil painting you are able to work from dark to light or light to dark, sometimes wiping off layers to redo certain areas. Not so with pure watercolor when color is either built up from light to dark or used directly without layering. You cannot erase…
I have experimented with watercolor and appreciate the way it dries fast and can either be a painstaking exercise or a quick study depending upon the mood. You can be as playful as you wish knowing that you aren’t investing precious time only to ruin it in the end. Get another page and try again! When you look at my watercolors I hope you can appreciate them for the fun and whimsy they represent.
